Petersfield Youth Theatre (PYT) was founded in 1990. It is a registered charity working to advance the education in music and theatrical arts amongst children and young adults aged 5 – 25.
In 2011, PYT took over a lease on a redundant 3 storey building dating from the early 1800s. The Grade 2 Listed property had suffered years of neglect and was in poor structural condition, with failing floors and walls with damp and timber decay throughout.
We drew up a scheme of essential structural repairs and internal alterations, to give the property a new lease of life as a dance studio and the first home for PYT. The project was designed by Roger Hill Architects, and the scope of the work involved close consultation with the local Authority Conservation Department, to ensure a balance between the care of the property and the needs of the clients.
Extensive timber decay within the basement and ground floor required new brick piers and steelwork to support the building fabric and provide new open spaces within the property. The boarded shop windows were replaced with new glazed units reinstating the traditional shop front and flooding the interior with light. New cloakrooms on the first floor and a dance studio were formed together with office and storage area. New heating, complete electrical installation, emergency and alarm systems were installed.
PYT volunteers provided the finishing touches to the internal decoration and were on hand with a willing smile when demolition or clearing out was required. It was a team effort throughout, and we are proud to have helped transform the building to a splendid interior where PYT can continue to flourish and enthral us with their amazing performances.
Below is a gallery set up in a before and after sequence showing the tranformation of the building.
